🔶 More than a thousand German lawyers call for the start of a ban process against the right-wing AfD party
More than one thousand legal professionals in Germany have backed the start of a legal process to ban the right-wing and populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the Federal Constitutional Court.
By signing an open letter addressed to the federal government and members of the German parliament (Bundestag), they have called for submitting an official request to ban the party. The letter, which was published in mid-July, initially had about 500 signatures, but according to the “Association of Republican Lawyers of Berlin,” the number of signatories doubled over ten days and is now 1,051.
The signatories include lawyers, judges, prosecutors, legal professionals working in both public and private sectors, as well as law trainees.
The letter cites a legal report. Published in June, the report states that the policies of the right-wing “Alternative for Germany” party are incompatible with the principles of human dignity and democracy in Germany’s constitution and therefore may be unconstitutional.
