Mehdi Tajzadeh, a political prisoner held in Evin Prison, in a statement called for the immediate halt to the execution of the protesters of Dey 1404, and asked all individuals, with any political and religious inclination, to clearly and openly announce their opposition to this irreversible punishment and to think of a solution to stop the executions. Tajzadeh wrote that Iran and Iranians need, more than ever, “rationality, calm, empathy, solidarity, dialogue, peace, and national reconciliation,” and warned that the escalation of anger and disappointment and the increasing polarization of society could provide the ground for internal clashes. He asked the authorities to make efforts through immediate reforms to win trust and citizens’ participation, abandon the “iron-fist policy,” and put an end to the execution of young protesting people. This political prisoner, pointing to serious flaws and ambiguities in the handling of the protesters’ cases, wrote that sending hastily young people to the gallows is neither fair nor compatible with reason and ethics. He called for the formation of an independent committee to review the protests of Dey 1404 and for defendants to have access to a lawyer, a public trial, and the right to defense, and warned that the executions would deepen the gap between the government and the nation and increase the risk of society returning to a cycle of reciprocal violence.
