🔻 Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the left-leaning president of Brazil, was elected president of this country for the fourth time in a closely contested and tense election, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro, his right-leaning rival.
Based on the results announced by Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court, Lula secured about 51.8% of the vote against 48.2% for his rival, reaching the presidency for a fourth non-consecutive term. Flávio Bolsonaro has not yet accepted his defeat.
This victory is historic in that Lula is the first presidential election candidate in Brazil since the return of democracy in the 1980s who, despite trailing in the first round, managed to win in the second round.
