🔻 Merz: Russia is trying every day to destabilize Germany

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, on Saturday called for greater unity among the country’s conservative parties and warned that Germany is facing escalating threats from political extremists and foreign powers.

Speaking at the Christian Social Union Party Congress in Munich, Merz said that Germany faces “extremely serious challenges.”

He said: “How can we protect our freedom and security in Europe against the growing threats posed by domestic extremists and foreign powers?”

The German chancellor also accused Russia of trying “every day” to destabilize the country.

Moscow has rejected accusations of involvement in sabotage activities and efforts to destabilize Germany and other European countries.

Relations between Germany and Russia have fallen to their lowest level since the Cold War after Russia’s military attack on Ukraine in 2022.

Merz also said in a meeting on October 8 with Andy Burnham, the UK prime minister, that strengthening cooperation between the two countries to counter cyberattacks, sabotage activities, and other security threats was discussed.

The meeting came after the German government, in September, identified Russia as responsible for an unsuccessful drone attack on Leipzig Airport.

During the attack on August 4, a drone carrying explosives was detected near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig Airport. German security forces neutralized the explosives.
