Axios, citing a U.S. official and a knowledgeable source, reported that Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, on Monday after the stalled talks with the Islamic Republic, ordered the delegation accompanying Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, to immediately leave New York.

The U.S. mission to the United Nations notified the Islamic Republic’s mission of this order that same night, and the Iranian delegation left New York at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday on a flight to Doha.

A U.S. official told Axios: “Rubio kicked out the Iranian delegation that had stayed too long. The United Nations General Assembly was over, so it was time for them to go.”

Iranian media had previously reported that Araqchi was expected to remain in New York until Wednesday.

The move came after Qatari mediators’ efforts to create an opening in Washington and Tehran’s talks did not yield results.
