According to a report by the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake of magnitude 5 struck at dawn on Monday, the 12th of Mordad, shaking areas of Egypt, including Cairo, the capital.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 36 kilometers north of Suez. The quake was also felt in parts of southern Israel and Jordan.

A BBC reporter in Cairo says that residents of Cairo and several other areas of Egypt felt a strong tremor at around 2:59 a.m. local time on Monday.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population said that an immediate central room for crisis management and emergency conditions has been set up in the ministry’s main building.

In a statement it published on the X network, the ministry announced that as of the time the statement was issued, it had not received any report on damage or human injuries from the earthquake.
