A court in Israel temporarily halted a plan under which it was set to use Nile River crocodiles around a large prison used to hold Palestinian prisoners.

An animal rights group had called for preventing the plan from being carried out by filing an urgent petition.

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s national security minister, who is from the far-right wing of Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, supports and backs the plan.

Israeli officials had started digging a trench around “Ketziot Prison” a month earlier to house the crocodiles. The prison holds Palestinian detainees.

Human Rights Watch said the plan shows how normalized and accepted violence in Israeli prisons is.

According to the court ruling, the suspension of the plan will continue until the Israeli government submits its response to the court.
