After the “signature crisis” that occurred during the joint press conference of the leaders of Turkey and Iraq, a number of Turkish analysts have claimed that Iran may oppose the “Development Road” project.

These speculations are raised while the Iraqi Minister of Transport, who observers say is close to Tehran, refused to sign the agreement related to this strategic corridor.

The Development Road project is expected to connect Basra to Europe through Turkey via a rail and road network, and, from the perspective of some commentators, will bring Ankara significant economic and geopolitical benefits.

An unexpected disagreement during the signing ceremony of bilateral agreements between Turkey and Iraq has intensified speculation about Iran’s role in opposing the strategic “Development Road” project. During the joint press conference of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ali Zeydi, the Iraqi prime minister, on July 28, Mr. Erdoğan realized that instead of the five agreements expected, only four documents for signing were on the table.
