🔻46 countries condemn the continued execution of protesters and opponents in Iran

A joint statement supported by 46 countries condemned the continuation and expansion of the use of the death penalty in Iran, especially against protesters.

The statement was read on September 30 at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva by Daniel Buttler, from the Permanent Mission of Liechtenstein.

The statement said that at least 31 protesters were executed after the suppression of the January protests, and that dozens of others, including women and children, have been sentenced to death or face an imminent risk of execution.

The signatories, citing findings by UN experts, said that the death penalty in Iran is used to “create fear, suppress dissent, and deter people from peaceful expression and assembly.” They also expressed concern about closed-door trials, deprivation of due process rights, torture, enforced disappearances, and forced confessions.
