🔶 46 countries condemn executions in Iran at the UN Human Rights Council

As international concerns about a wave of executions in Iran have increased, 46 countries at the UN Human Rights Council issued a joint statement condemning the Islamic Republic’s use of the death penalty to suppress fundamental freedoms and create fear in society.

The statement was read by Liechtenstein during the general session of the UN Human Rights Council on September 30, 2026.

In the joint statement, the 46 countries said that officials of the Islamic Republic continue to increasingly use the death penalty—a trend, according to them, that has raised serious concerns especially after the crackdown on the protests in Dey 1404 and the execution of protestors.

These countries warned that the death penalty in Iran is being used to silence fundamental freedoms, suppress opponents, and create an atmosphere of fear.

Among the main issues of concern cited in the joint statement of the Human Rights Council are violations of due process, torture, the taking of forced confessions, and trials that fall short of international standards for a fair court.
