🔻Voting begins paving the way for a potential Alberta referendum on separation from Canada

A public vote to kick off the process of a referendum in the Canadian province of Alberta has begun.

In this referendum, voters decide whether the provincial government should begin the necessary legal steps to hold a binding referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada.

The vote is being held following an increase in dissatisfaction with the policies of the federal government, especially in the areas of energy and natural resources. However, the outcome of the referendum alone will not mean Alberta’s separation from Canada, and can only provide the basis for starting the legal process of holding a binding referendum.

Separatists say that despite having the world’s fourth-largest oil reserves, Alberta is being ignored by the central government in Ottawa.

At the same time, the Indigenous peoples of this province are seeking to stop this process because they believe that any change to the law in this province would violate agreements between the central government and the Indigenous people of Alberta.
