🔻 Vote counting in Alberta so far shows that the plan to hold a mandatory referendum on independence from Canada was rejected.

The state networks CBC and CTV, citing political analysts, predicted a decisive victory for supporters of Canadian unity.

With nearly 70% of the votes counted, the official results show support of more than 76% for keeping Alberta in Canada.

Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, who grew up in this province, welcomed the result, saying: “The people of Alberta made a clear choice. They chose unity, participation and looking after one another and, more importantly, the people of Alberta chose Canada.”

Carney’s argument for keeping Alberta in Canada was that the country needs stability in the face of a trade war and threats from Donald Trump, the president of the United States.

Jeffrey Rath, one of the senior leaders of the separatist group “Alberta Prosperity Project,” told reporters that despite the voting outcome, the push for independence would “definitely” continue. 📷Reuters
