US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent plans to encourage G20 financial meeting members to carry out sanctions imposed by the government of Iran; a move that faces obstacles due to Tehran’s trade ties with China and economic differences among the Group of 20 members.
The finance ministers and central bank chiefs of the G20’s major economies will gather in Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday. A U.S. Treasury Department official told Agence France-Presse that Bessent will use this meeting and bilateral meetings to try to expand Iran’s economic isolation.
China, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, is one of the main challenges of this campaign, and it is still unclear whether Bessent will meet with Beijing officials or not. He had previously warned about expanding secondary sanctions against countries that do not align with the U.S. campaign.
The meeting is being held as the war in the Middle East, rising energy costs, and U.S. trade policies have increased disagreements among G20 members. Washington also intends to focus on debt, trade, financial stability, and the supply of essential resources.
