Ukrainian foreign minister on Iran:
I held a frank conversation with Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Diplomacy means direct dialogue, even when that dialogue is difficult. I emphasized that our goal is to avoid unnecessary escalation.
I reiterated that all of Ukraine’s actions are solely to defend our country against Russian aggression, and never to target civilian ships or ordinary people.
The same is true with regard to Iran’s remarks about the Iranian citizen who died, as well as the civilian vessel that was targeted in a recent incident. Our aim is to counter Russian aggression, which lies at the root of all these events, and it is Russia that bears full responsibility for all provocations and casualties.
I stressed the necessity of avoiding any provocative action, as well as putting an end to any support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. This war is illegal and must end.
Our position remains unchanged: Europe and the Middle East deserve stability, security, and peace.
