🔶 Ukraine says it does not want to escalate tensions with Iran

Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, after a deadly attack on an Iranian cargo ship, made a phone call to his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, and explained the incident.

Sybiha said on the X platform that Kyiv’s goal is to prevent unnecessary escalation of tensions.

He made the remarks on Tuesday, July 28 (5 Amordad), after his meeting in Washington with Donald Trump, the U.S. president, alongside Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine. According to him, Ukraine’s goal in these attacks is simply to defend itself against Russian aggression.

The Ukrainian foreign minister acknowledged that during the attack, an Iranian citizen was killed. Abbas Araghchi, while condemning the attack, threatened retaliation. He also accused Zelensky—who had informed about the attack—of violating international laws, and in this regard also addressed the European Union and Russia.

Sybiha asked his Iranian counterpart to refrain from any provocative action and to stop any support for Russia’s military aggression. He said: “This is an unlawful war and it must end.”

Abbas Araghchi also said on the X platform that Sybiha assured him that this attack was “unintentional” and that Ukraine does not want to escalate tensions.
