🔸U.S. approves sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine
The U.S. State Department has confirmed the sale of 500 Patriot “PAC-3” interceptors to Ukraine, valued at approximately $2.1 billion, but it is believed that delivery of these missiles will likely not begin until the 2030s due to the need to produce them.
According to Reuters, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has asked the Pentagon to bring forward the delivery timeline. One option is to send missiles from the current U.S. stockpiles and replace them with new production in the future.
Ukraine needs these missiles highly to counter Russian missile attacks. The Patriot is considered Ukraine’s most effective system for countering Russian ballistic missiles.
The cost of this purchase will be covered through aid from Canada, Germany, and Norway, as well as part of a European Union loan to Ukraine. The company Lockheed Martin is the primary contractor for this deal, but production capacity limits and the consumption of U.S. ammunition in other military operations, including in Iran, have made the rapid delivery of the missiles difficult.
