The U.S. Treasury Department has proposed regulations that limit investment by U.S. individuals and companies in certain sensitive technologies in Iran, China, Russia, North Korea, and Cuba.
According to Reuters, the plan covers six areas, including semiconductors and microelectronics, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, high-performance computing and supercomputing, hypersonic systems, and biotech.
Some investments must be reported to the Treasury Department, and investment in certain AI technologies will be prohibited.
Christopher Pilekrton, assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department, said the goal is not only to prevent the transfer of funds, and that the communications network and the supply chain resulting from the investment are also of concern.
These regulations have not yet been finalized and will not yet be implemented. The Treasury Department will receive public comments until December 7, and after reviewing them, it will announce the final regulations and the date the program will take effect. Some deals below $50,000 and investments in publicly traded companies may be exempt from the regulations.
