The International Maritime Organization (IMO) reported the killing of at least 20 seafarers in 68 maritime incidents near the Strait of Hormuz.

The organization, pointing to military tensions in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, said that these 68 incidents have been confirmed in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters; that is, an incident every 2.6 days on average.

According to the UN-supervised international body, as a result of these incidents, at least 20 seafarers were killed, 35 were injured, and one person is missing.

About half of these incidents involved oil tankers, 20% involved container ships, and 15% involved bulk carriers.

The United Kingdom’s Maritime Trade Operations Center said that at least 47 of the above incidents involved attacks on ships, with the highest number of incidents involving ships flying the flag of Liberia—13 incidents. After that, ships flying the flags of Panama and the Marshall Islands stand at 10 incidents.

Ships flying the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran were involved in four incidents.
