🔶 The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Canadian female writer "Anne Carson"
Anne Carson, a Canadian poet and essayist whose works move between poetry, prose, translation, myth, and philosophy, has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Swedish Academy, in its announcement of this year’s laureate, praised Carson for her “bold and innovative body of work”; works, according to the Academy, that, in a “playful dialogue with the classical tradition,” have created fresh forms for contemporary literature.
Born in 1950 in Toronto, Anne Carson is among the figures whose literary work is difficult to confine to a single genre. She is both a poet and an essayist, as well as a translator and a researcher of classical literature.
In her works, Carson has repeatedly returned to the literature and myths of ancient Greece, but has recreated this tradition in modern—and at times entirely experimental—forms. Her first book, “Eros the Sweet Bitter,” was published in 1986; a work that linked literary criticism with an examination of the concept of desire and love within the Greek tradition.
Her best-known work, “The Red Autobiography,” was published in 1998. This book is a verse novel inspired by fragments remaining from Sappho, the ancient Greek poet, and it turns the weeping myth of the Red-winged serpent killed by Heracles into a modern story about adolescence, love, loneliness, and emotional failure.
