🔶El Niño 2026; Which parts of the world are at risk of drought and flooding?
In South America, concerns about heavy rainfall and flooding have increased. In southern Africa, farmers are preparing for higher temperatures and reduced rainfall. In California as well, coastal cities face the risk of storms, higher waves, and increased shoreline erosion.
The common factor behind all these different hazards is a climate phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean: El Niño.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has predicted that this year’s El Niño could be very intense and that its effects may continue until February 2027. This phenomenon can have serious consequences for people, agriculture, and the environment in different parts of the world.
