Sean Parin, the senior Pentagon spokesperson, announced that the United States and its coalition partners officially ended “Operation Inherent Resolve,” the military mission to confront ISIS in Iraq, and handed responsibility for dealing with the remnants of ISIS and Iran-aligned militias to the Iraqi government.
In a statement, Parin said that the withdrawal of coalition forces and equipment from Erbil airbase marked the end of this military mission in Iraq. According to him, this mission was part of a 12-year campaign that defeated ISIS as an organized military threat in Iraq and the region.
The senior Pentagon spokesperson added that with the end of this mission, the primary responsibility for providing security in Iraq and confronting the remnants of ISIS will be on Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga and other security forces of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
Based on this statement, the United States will continue to provide targeted training and intelligence support to its Iraqi partners.
