Most of the tens of thousands of migrants who arrived on Thursday by swimming into Spain’s Ceuta area were taken back to Morocco, with the help of military forces and police, all the way to the border line.

But this unprecedented wave of migrant arrivals has left at least 72 dead; bodies that were pulled from the water and were floating on the surface of the sea among circles of sand and discarded swimming flippers.

This week’s events have also shaken Europe politically and once again revealed differences over the sensitive issue of migration.

However, this event has left questions unanswered: what caused this sudden wave of migrant arrivals? Did it spread quickly merely because of posts shared on social media that promised an easy route to Europe, or was there more to the story—and even that it had been organized?
