Reuters, citing three informed sources, reported that the United States intends to reactivate a military base from the Cold War era in southern Greenland and to maintain a military presence at another base on the eastern coast of the island.

The two bases are located in Narssarsuaq and Mestersvig, and the move is part of an agreement that is scheduled to be signed on Tuesday between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The text of the agreement has not yet been released, and its details may change until the time of signing.

The Narssarsuaq base was shut down by the United States in the 1950s, while Mestersvig is currently used by Sirius Sledge Patrol, from the Danish special forces units.

Denmark says the new agreement will place oversight of security in the Arctic within the framework of NATO. The agreement comes after months of pressure from Donald Trump to increase U.S. control over Greenland.

During the Cold War, the United States had 17 bases and more than 10,000 military personnel in Greenland, but now only the Pituffik space base remains, with about 150 U.S. personnel.
