🔶 Pressure on Germany’s Left Party; threat to cut financial support to Berlin

The victory of the Left Party has increased the likelihood of forming the first state government in Berlin led by this party. The state governments run by the governing parties of the Christian Democrats have threatened financial consequences for Berlin, should a state government be formed led by the Left Party.

If the Left Party succeeds in forming and leading Berlin’s state government, the states whose governments are in the hands of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union have threatened the German capital with financial consequences.

Klaus Holetscheck, head of the Christian Social Union parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament, after a meeting of the leaders of the parliamentary groups of the states governed by the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union in Munich, said: “If Berlin gets a state government that has antisemitism and hatred of Jews in its program, we will begin a joint initiative; including regarding the question of who will cover the capital’s costs.”
