After months of intense and prolonged negotiations, Hamas has for the first time accepted the framework of the “Peace Committee” plan for the complete disarmament in Gaza.

The plan envisions that the remaining heavy weapons of Hamas will be listed and stored under Palestinian oversight; an action that could remove the biggest obstacle to implementing the Trump-backed peace initiative for Gaza.

This development occurred shortly after the end of Hamas’s leadership elections; elections in which Khalil al-Hayya, the current leader in Gaza, was appointed head of the movement.

Palestinian officials involved in the negotiations believe the new Hamas leadership is ready to take what they describe as the most important political decision in the history of Hamas; a decision, they say, was made under the influence of the catastrophic humanitarian conditions of more than two million Palestinians in Gaza.
