More than 30 countries condemn executions of protesters in Iran; call for immediate halt

🔸More than 30 countries around the world condemned Iran’s continued issuance and execution of death sentences against protesters in Iran, describing them as a tool to “silence the voices of opponents.”

🔸On Wednesday, 21 Mordad, 26 member countries of the European Union, along with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, issued a statement condemning, in the “strongest possible terms, the continued execution of Iranian protesters.”

🔸In the statement, they stressed: “Using executions to silence opponents, intimidate societies, and punish individuals who only want to exercise their human rights is by no means justifiable.”

🔸The statement added that “the people of Iran must be free to use the right to freedom of expression and to attend peaceful gatherings without fear.”

🔸According to Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s foreign minister, after the initial publication of the statement, six other countries also joined the signatories, raising the number of signatory countries to 32.

🔸Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United Kingdom are among other non-EU countries that, by signing the statement, called for “an immediate halt to Iran’s use of executions against opponents and the release of all detainees held involuntarily in this country.”
