Mahboobeh Shabanī, one of those detained in the nationwide protests of Dey 1404 in Mashhad, has been sentenced to death by Branch One of the Revolutionary Court in the city. According to reports from human-rights sources, during the protests she used her personal motorcycle to transfer injured protesters to medical centers. In an audio file received by Iran International, Shabanī also expressed concern about the issuance of death sentences for protesters and what she described as the unfair process of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic.

Alī Shahid, a member of Iran International’s editorial team, said that Mahboobeh Shabanī’s case is an example of the judiciary’s submission to security institutions. He added that the increase in death sentences for women who have been detained shows that the government’s crackdown on women’s presence and role in protests and in the public sphere has intensified.
