🔶 Lula vs. Bolsonaro competition; Brazil’s election and its international dimensions 🔻 Report by Thomas Miltz
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made blunt remarks at the opening ceremony of the United Nations General Assembly. The president of Brazil said on Tuesday, September 29 (Mehr 7) in New York: “Brazil is not anyone’s backyard.” The target of those remarks was Donald Trump, the U.S. president, who had repeatedly sided with the right-wing and with Jair Messias Bolsonaro in Brazil’s domestic politics. Through the imposition of sanctions and customs tariffs, Trump had attempted to prevent the former Brazilian president from being condemned for efforts to carry out a coup.
In Brazil’s presidential election on October 4, Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of Jair Bolsonaro, will face Lula, the current president of Brazil. Polls show the two candidates are almost tied in voting intention. Brazil’s election has attracted significant international attention. The country, the world’s fifth-largest, is considered a major agricultural power and has vast reserves of raw materials; ranging from rare elements and broad water resources to enormous reserves of crude oil.
