Kuwait revoked the nationality of 25 people on Wednesday. Among them is Sheikh Husein Al-Mutaweq, a Shiite cleric, and five other civil activists. According to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai, the decision was made based on the 1959 nationality law.

Kuwait has been reviewing nationality cases for the past two years. During this period, nearly 50,000 people have lost their nationality.

Kuwait’s law allows nationality to be revoked in four cases: fraud, forgery, having the nationality of another country, and acting against the country’s interests. Kuwaiti officials typically do not say which case they have applied.
