«Knife; an Attempt on Salman Rushdie» by Alex Gibney is the title of a new documentary that delves into the attempt to kill this writer in 2022 from different angles and, in various ways, traces it back to Ayatollah Khomeini’s fatwa for the murder.

The film, made based on a bestselling book by Salman Rushdie titled «Knife», stays faithful to its structure and narrative, with the same intimate and comfortable narrator from the book who delivers the film’s narration here.

We are faced with images, some of which are shown for the first time, including photographs of Rushdie in the hospital after the attack, taken by his wife—Rachel Eliza Griffith, who is herself a poet and writer—and are harrowing; including the moment Rushdie comes to consciousness and the place where, despite his unfavorable condition, Rushdie has no doubts about granting permission for filming: «This isn’t only about me; it’s about freedom.»

In several different sections, the film returns to Khomeini’s fatwa and the prize that the Iranian government has set for the killing of Rushdie, while at the beginning it tells us that the attacker in court said that he praises Ayatollah Khomeini.
