Jina Romero, the UN Special Rapporteur on the freedom of peaceful assembly and association, announced that on Tuesday, 21 Mehr, in solidarity with prisoners in Iran, she will join the “Tuesdays No to Execution” hunger strike and called for a halt to executions and independent monitoring of the situation of prisoners facing execution.
In a post on X, Romero wrote that the death penalty in Iran is used against people who have exercised their freedoms of assembly, association, expression, and political rights. She said that in the protests of December 1404, thousands of protesters were killed and that since March, at least 46 protesters have been executed; a figure, according to her, that is the highest number of political executions in nearly 40 years.
Romero also said that the cases of detained protesters have been accompanied by violations of the principles of fair trial and human rights. By naming a number of those executed and prisoners under death sentences, she wrote: “They put everything they have at risk behind prison bars. I was joining them from outside the prison.”
Måi Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, also, by resharing Romero’s message, described it as an “important post.”
