Jim Banks, a U.S. Republican senator, told Fox News that Donald Trump still prefers a diplomatic solution, but if the Islamic Republic does not quickly reach an agreement about ending its nuclear program and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will again carry out extensive attacks.

He said that the postponement of the recent attacks is not a sign of weakness or retreat, but rather another opportunity for Tehran to return to negotiations.

Banks said the main goal of Trump is to prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons, and that reopening the Strait of Hormuz and stopping the nuclear program would be the yardsticks for measuring Tehran’s adherence to any possible agreement.

He also claimed that there are two approaches within the power structure of the Islamic Republic, and that part of the leadership, under U.S. military pressure, supports an agreement.

The Republican senator warned that if Tehran does not carry out its possible commitments, Trump will order an attack again, and the Islamic Republic will face its consequences.

According to him, officials of the Islamic Republic know that if negotiations fail, the United States will again use a military option.
