Iran’s foreign minister says negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz are nearing finalization.

Abbas Araqchi, at the start of Sunday’s meeting of the cabinet, provided a report on the latest status of negotiations between Iran and Oman and said that the talks are “on the path to being finalized and are going through their final stages.”

At the same time, Ismail Baqaei, spokesperson of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that negotiations between Tehran and Muscat are for an agreement on a corridor and a specified route in the Strait of Hormuz between the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Mr. Baqaei said that the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz in Oman’s waters “has been accompanied by making the region insecure and harming Iran’s national interests, and Tehran does not accept it.”

He added that the agreed route “will be neither the current northern route nor the current southern route, but rather a new route that the two sides will reach an understanding on.”

Mr. Baqaei, however, emphasized that Iran and Oman’s understanding has nothing to do with whether the Strait of Hormuz remains open or closed.
