Germany is considering joining the “Global Combat Air Programme”

Boris Pistorius, Germany’s defense minister, said on Monday in Berlin that Germany is examining the possibility of joining the fighter-jet construction program “Global Combat Air Programme” (GCAP).

Pistorius said that initial talks have begun about the prospect of Germany joining the joint project of Britain, Italy and Japan to build a next-generation fighter.

Germany’s previous plan to build a next-generation fighter, pursued with the participation of France and Spain, was halted earlier this year due to disagreements among the aerospace companies of the three countries.

Andy Burnham, the UK prime minister, on October 8 (16 Mehr), invited Germany to join the Global Combat Air Programme.

This comes as a consortium of eight companies, including Airbus, has offered Germany to take on the project to build a next-generation fighter themselves. The Swedish aerospace company Saab has also been mentioned as a possible partner for Germany and Airbus.
