🔻 Refrigerators and freezers from dozens of supermarkets in seven European countries were targeted by a cyberattack. About 40 Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were affected by this attack, but in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia, and Finland the number of stores was smaller.
Sabicool, the Belgian manufacturer whose some of the refrigerators were targeted, said that the evaporators of [cooling liquid] in these devices were switched to a defrost mode, which made them warm. This is believed to be the same method that targeted hundreds of supermarkets in France in October. Local media at the time reported that millions of euros’ worth of food were thrown away.
Stefan Moulans, CEO of Sabicool, which runs Delhaize systems, told the Belgian news agency Belga on Monday that the incident was a cyberattack and that the company worked “all night and in the morning” to disconnect the affected devices from the network.
