🔶German Unity; a Project That Is Not Yet Complete

October 3, 2026 (11 Mehr 1405) marks the 36th anniversary of the unification of the two Germanys. This year, Bremen, Germany’s smallest state, is hosting the national celebrations. More than 400,000 people will visit the port city over three days and take part in more than 100 stages featuring music, theater, and discussion.

The official ceremony began with a joint prayer from the Protestant and Catholic churches in St. Peter’s Cathedral. Afterwards, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany, and Friedrich Merz, Chancellor, took part in the official ceremony at the “Die Glocke” concert hall. Steinmeier warned of the growing threat to democracy from extremism. He said: “Unbearable political demagoguery by extremist forces that are drowning in the desire to destroy and ridicule and threaten others not only endangers freedom and democracy today, but also endangers our unity.”
