France will deploy 70,000 police officers for the third week of nationwide protests on Saturday, the 9th of Aban. The protests are targeting rising prices, the state of public services, and the government of Emmanuel Macron, president of France, and they take place two weeks after a riot and looting that caught security forces off guard.
France’s Chamber of Commerce estimated retailers’ losses at more than one billion euros, equal to $1.1 billion.
The French government is advancing a controversial law that holds rioters responsible for damages or the group they are identified as members of, up to 10,000 euros, equal to $11,000. Human rights organizations and a number of lawyers say that this move threatens the right to peaceful protest.
The unrest has bolstered the position of Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right. Ms. Le Pen is leading in pre-presidential election polls for next spring.
