🔻Following the collapse of a school roof in the city of Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, as of the time of publication of this video, at least 34 people have been killed and 19 others have been injured.
In a statement, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed “deep sorrow and regret” over the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
Initial reports indicate that at the time the incident occurred, children were in classrooms.
Rescuers at the scene say they are searching among the rubble to find other people who are believed to have been trapped.
The police said the building “could not bear the weight of the students and therefore collapsed.” They also said that the owner of the school has been arrested.
The collapse of roofs and buildings in Pakistan is a common occurrence. These incidents mostly happen due to failure to follow safety standards and the use of low-quality building materials.
In June this year as well, more than 12 children died after the collapse of the roof of an educational center in Lahore, in eastern Pakistan.
