Experts say that after a series of attacks on ships toward the Bab el-Mandeb strait, another of the region’s important shipping routes, the threat to oil tankers carrying oil in the Middle East has reached the highest level since the start of the Iran war.

This warning has been raised following several attacks on ships in the Red Sea; an alternative route that some tankers had chosen to use after Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has rejected Donald Trump, the U.S. president’s, claim that Tehran and Washington are in negotiations about reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iranian officials have said that they are in talks with Oman to ensure security for this sea route.

Matthew Wright, an analyst at the ship-tracking company Clipper, said: «In terms of the threat to crude oil trade, we are now in the worst situation since the start of this crisis.»

Based on Clipper’s data, on Sunday only eight ships and on Saturday 11 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz; whereas before the start of the war, more than 100 ships passed through this waterway every day.

Before the start of U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, around 20% of the world’s oil and gas was transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
