French President Emmanuel Macron says he had a “very constructive” conversation with Donald Trump, the U.S. president, about ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The discussion took place on Monday, September 30, shortly after Macron and Trump arrived in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

About 20% of the oil and gas consumed worldwide usually passes through the Strait of Hormuz, until this process was disrupted since the start of the war between the United States and Israel with Iran in Esfand 1404.

In a conversation with reporters, Macron said: “Several solutions were discussed that would provide the necessary capability and mechanisms for the passage of a higher number of container ships and tankers, without the need for a comprehensive agreement.”

He, however, did not provide further details.

According to a French diplomatic source, speaking to France International Radio, Paris wants to work with Washington and other partners to adopt a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The report says that UN member states can help provide security for maritime transit, and this would likely allow Washington and Tehran to focus their negotiations on other disagreements, including Iran’s nuclear program.
