🔻Estimates indicate the separatist Party Quebecois’ victory in Canada’s Quebec election

Canadian media estimate that the separatist party “Quebec solidaire” will win the provincial election on Monday in Quebec, but it will not secure a majority of seats, and Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon will reach the post of the new premier of this province.

It will be the first time since 2014 that the “Parti Quebecois” takes power in Quebec again. This result could be a test for Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, and could set the stage for disagreement and confrontation between the federal government and Quebec over issues such as immigration and the monarchy.

The party has also promised to hold a referendum on Quebec’s independence; an action similar to the independence referendum that is set to be held in Alberta toward the end of this month.

Quebec, whose majority of population is French-speaking, has previously held independence referendums in the 1980s and 1995. Polls show that only about 30% of Quebec residents support this province’s independence.

Plamondon has said that this referendum will be held after the end of Donald Trump’s presidency, the president of the United States.
