🔶 Democrats take control of both houses of the U.S. Congress
The Democratic Party succeeded in the U.S. midterm elections with a sweeping victory, removing control of the country’s Congress from Republicans, both in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. This result is considered a major political defeat for Donald Trump, the U.S. president, and the Republican Party. Democrats can now face serious challenges in the final two years of his presidency.
To secure a majority in the House of Representatives, at least 218 seats out of 435 are necessary, and in the Senate, at least 51 seats out of 100 are required.
Before the elections, Republicans held a majority in both houses. However, Democrats, by winning in several Republican states, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Ohio, were able to also gain the Senate majority.
Democrats’ victory in Congress allows the party to block the Trump administration’s legislative initiatives, carry out investigations and fact-finding inquiries into the performance of his government, and play a decisive role in the process of confirming judicial appointments and senior government posts.
Rising cost of living, higher fuel prices, trade tariffs, and the war with Iran were among the issues that helped shape voter dissatisfaction and played a role in the election result.
