At least 31 killed in attack on a police headquarters in northern Pakistan;

At least 31 people, including 16 police officers, were killed and more than 100 others were injured in a suicide attack and shooting at a police headquarters in northern Pakistan. A senior police official said the attack took place on Friday afternoon, and the fighting continued on Saturday.

The official, who asked not to be named, said: “Several militants are still hiding in the Special Branch section of the Kohat Police Complex. The exchange of fire with them has continued since late last night, and the number of them is not clear.”

The attackers stormed the police complex in the city of Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The complex is a county-level police headquarters and houses key offices of the Counter-Terrorism Department, the Special Branch, and several other police units.

Pakistan attributes the increase in attacks in the border province of Balochistan to fighters who come from Afghanistan. The Taliban government denies involvement by Afghanistan.
