American forces left their latest bases in Iraq on Wednesday, the 8th of Mehr, based on an agreement reached in 2024 during the presidency of Joe Biden; 23 years after the U.S.-led coalition’s attack on Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s government. Some Iraqi security officials, both in the central government and in Iraqi Kurdistan, have warned that this withdrawal may provide the ground for ISIS to regain strength, and analysts have also expressed concern about the possibility of further strengthening of militias supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Islamic Republic seeks to present this withdrawal as a victory of the “Axis of Resistance.”
