America expels Cuban diplomat;
America has expelled Ricardo Torres de la Concepción, the First Secretary of Cuba’s mission to the United Nations. The U.S. State Department spokesperson said on Wednesday that Cuba was notified that this individual was unwelcome in the United States, and as a result he left the country.
He is accused of hitting a mobile phone with his hand on Tuesday in the General Assembly Hall belonging to a member of the U.S. delegation who was filming.
A separate verbal clash also broke out on the same day between Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Bruno Rodríguez, Cuba’s foreign minister. Waltz, during the annual debate about the U.S. economic sanctions against Cuba, said he was faced with disruption of the public order of the meeting by Cubans and shouted: “This is America, my friend. You can’t make me be quiet.”
On Wednesday, Ernesto Soberón, Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations, in an open letter to the Secretary-General, accused Waltz’s spokesman of harassing his colleague. The letter did not mention the expulsion.
