🔻Ahmed al-Sharaa, president of Syria, said on Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly that the Golan Heights region will remain Syrian territory.

The remarks came after Colombia last month recognized Israel’s sovereignty over this strategic area.

Speaking at a meeting of world leaders in New York, al-Sharaa said: “Any attempt that violates our sovereignty and international laws will be stopped. The Golan will continue to be part of Syrian territory. Any other attempt will also be neutralized in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 497.”

Al-Sharaa had previously, at a meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly, joked with U.S. President Trump, saying that he had asked him to give New Jersey to Israel because, according to him, Trump owns it, while the Golan belongs to his people.

At a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly sessions, al-Sharaa said, “It is President Trump who stood alongside Syria, supported it, and made a historic decision to lift sanctions against Syria.”
