🔻On the morning of April 25, 2024, the family of Hasan Ahmed in the village of Jabata al-Khashab, located on the border with Israel, was going about an ordinary day.
Family members were drinking coffee, and Hasan was preparing to go to his workplace when he received a call: Israeli soldiers had entered his agricultural land and detained his son, Saddam, who was then 17 years old.
Hasan says the soldiers bound his son’s hands and blindfolded him, then told him that his presence in that place—according to them—constituted an offense against the soil of the State of Israel.
The village is located in a buffer zone between Syria and Israel; a zone that is part of Syrian territory and includes Syrian villages. The 1974 disengagement agreement prohibits the presence of military forces of both sides in that area.
Hasan later learned that his son was being held in the special section for individuals under legal age at Ofer Prison, and after reaching the age of legal responsibility he was transferred to the men’s section. Then all news of him completely stopped. According to his father, Saddam has not been tried and no charges have been brought against him to date.
Based on government data that the BBC has obtained, Saddam’s case is not exceptional; 43 Syrian citizens are still detained in Israel, and most of them were detained after the fall of the government of Bashar al-Assad.
