🔻According to a report by the Associated Press, as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, Iraq has begun importing fuel via a port in Syria.
The news agency said on Tuesday, the seventh of Mehr, that Iraqi fuel tankers loaded gasoline at the Syrian port of Baniyas to respond to the sharply increased demand for energy.
Disruption in traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has delivered a widespread shock to the global economy, prompting various countries to scramble to find alternative routes; at the same time, fuel prices have also risen sharply. Before the outbreak of the war, about one-fifth of the oil and gas traded in global markets passed through this strait.
The Associated Press says that Syria, under the interim presidency of Ahmed al-Sharaa, who in December 2024 removed the previous president of the country, Bashar al-Assad, from power, has used this opportunity to strengthen its economy and has provided the port of Baniyas as an alternative route to countries. Markets in the United States and Europe have also used this port.
