A South Korean container ship completed the country’s first commercial round trip to Europe via the North Pole on Sunday.
According to Reuters, the Pan Star Akro ship docked 50 days after departing from Busan port in southeastern South Korea. South Korean officials say the route could cut travel time by about one-third.
Lee Jae-myung, the President of South Korea, has prioritized North Pole shipping. Officials hope to launch regular routes by 1409.
But the plan could create friction with Western allies. The route passes along the Arctic shores of Russia, and Seoul consulted with Moscow about the trip.
Using the North Pole route later became a priority for some countries after the Islamic Republic caused problems for global shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb.
