A judge in the U.S. state of New Mexico has ruled that Meta must pay an additional $567 million; because the company had not warned the public about the risks that its platforms posed to children. The verdict is considered Meta’s biggest conviction in terms of child safety.

The new ruling is in addition to the $375 million fine that Meta had already been ordered to pay earlier in the same case.

A Meta spokesperson, which owns and operates Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads, said: “We disagree with this ruling and will request an appeal.”

He added: “We work hard to keep users safe on our platforms and have been transparent about the challenges of identifying and removing bad actors and harmful content. We continue to be confident in our performance in protecting teens online, and we will continue to defend ourselves against allegations that misrepresent the facts.”
